University of Kent Tuition Fee Increase Policy

Introduction

This document provides important information about the University’s tuition fees policy for undergraduate and postgraduate students in relation to possible future increases in tuition fees.

By accepting an offer to study you are entering into a legally binding contract with the University on terms which include this Tuition Fee Increase Policy (see Terms and Conditions of Offer for full details, including on payment of fees). You should keep a copy of this Tuition Fee Policy for your own records.

1. Tuition Fee Increases

Fee rate increases are reviewed annually.  The rate of increases that apply will depend on when a student started a programme of study, the programme that they are studying and whether they have been assessed to pay fees at the home or international fee rate.

1.1. Home Undergraduate Students

For undergraduate students assessed as paying fees at the home rate the tuition fee for the first year of your course is as set out in your offer letter.

All universities are subject to rising costs due to inflation. In order to ensure we can maintain the quality of your educational and student experience, we may need to increase your tuition fees in the second and subsequent years of your course.

The Government sets the maximum tuition fee that the University can charge home students in any academic year. Your tuition fees will increase at our discretion up to the maximum amount permitted by UK law or regulation for that academic year.

To give you an indication of the likely scale of any future increase, the UK government  suggested in the Autumn of 2024 that future increases to tuition fees may be linked to RPIX (Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments) For example, the tuition fees increase to £9,535 for the academic year 2025/6 (from £9,250 the previous year) was an increase of 3.1% based on a forecast of RPIX for the mid-point of the 2025/6 academic year. You can check out the Government’s Education Hub for more information: Student fees and maintenance loan increase: what you need to know – The Education Hub.

If we intend to increase your tuition fees we will notify you by 30 June in the current academic year of the increased tuition fees payable from the beginning of the next academic year.  Annual fee rates are published on our website Tuition Fees Undergraduate.

If we notify you of an increase in tuition fees for future academic years of your course, you have the right to end your contract with the University. If you do choose to terminate, and wish to transfer to another university of your choice to complete your degree qualification, we will work with you to help you.

1.2. International Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students

All universities are subject to rising costs due to inflation. In order to ensure we can maintain the quality of your educational and student experience, we are entitled to increase your tuition fees in the second and subsequent years of your course.

Your tuition fees will increase annually at our discretion by an amount not exceeding RPIX (link) at the date we notify you + 3%.  The RPIX for March will be used as the base measure for the following academic year’s fees (for example, the change in RPIX between March 2024 and March 2025 will be the index applied to the 2025/26 academic year tuition fees in order to determine the 2026/27 academic year tuition fees.

If we intend to increase your tuition fees we will notify you by 30 June in the current academic year of the increased tuition fees payable from the beginning of the next academic year.  Annual fee rates are published on our website Tuition fees.

The UKRI sets the minimum tuition fee that the University can draw from UKRI training grants in any academic year. Your tuition fees will increase in line with the fees as set annually by the UKRI.  This is usually announced in February prior to the start of the next Academic year.  For 2024/25 the fee was published on the 14 February 2024.

To give you an indication of the likely scale of any future increase, the UKRI increased fees from £4,712 2023/2024 to £4,786 in 2024/25.  This was an increase of 1.57% and was set in line with a different measure of inflation used by UKRI for that year.
